What is .AAE File Extension?
In previous versions of iOS, when you edit a photo, the original image was overwritten automatically. iOS 8 (and later versions) and macOS 10.10 (and later versions) offer .AAE files by means of Photos app. The original version of an image is not altered when edits are made in Photos. These edits are saved as separate files with .AAE extensions. This implies that the edited files are saved separately, and the original file remains the same way in its original directory. Now, when you open an edited photo (.JPG file), the Photos app will refer to its associated .AAE file and will display the edited version on the screen.
